Mevlut Erding dents Marseille's title hopes as Saint-Etienne come back to draw

A last-gasp equaliser from Mevlut Erding gives Saint-Etienne a 2-2 draw with travelling Marseille in Ligue 1, despite Michy Batshuayi's second-half brace.

Two goals in three second-half minutes from Michy Batshuayi were not enough for Marseille, as Mevlut Erding's last-minute equaliser earned Saint-Etienne a 2-2 draw against Marcelo Bielsa's men in Ligue 1.

Etienne made their intentions clear from the start when Max Gradel crossed for Ricky van Wolfswinkel, but he could only send his header wide of the target without troubling Steve Mandanda.

Marseille failed to offer too much going forward in the first period and they had to rely on a long-range effort from Giannelli Imbula, which was saved comfortably by Stephane Ruffier in the centre of goal.

The home side were presented with the chance to take the lead in the second half when OM's Jeremy Morel brought down Romain Hamouma inside the box, leaving Gradel to slot home from the spot.

The goal seemed to spark Marseille into action and they equalised in the 64th minute, as Batshuayi broke free inside the area to finish into the bottom-left corner.

Batshuayi turned the game on its head just three minutes later when he put OM into the lead, his brace coming via a close-range shot from Romain Alessandrini's cross.

Marseille could have put an end to any last-minute nerves had Lucas Ocampos done better with his shooting, leaving the game open to a nail-biting final 10 minutes.

It looked as though OM would see out the fixture to claim all three points, but Erding had other ideas as he tapped home in injury time to steal a surprise draw and potentially dent Marseille's title ambitions.
