A second-half strike from Sanna Nyassi was enough to hand the San Jose Earthquakes a 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in a match where both teams finished with 10 men.
The home side had the ball in the net early in the game when Adam Jahn collected Matias Garcia's pass and placed it past David Ousted, only to see the effort disallowed for offside.
Neither side was able to threaten in the remainder of the first half as both lacked quality in the final third of the pitch to create an opening.
At the start of the second half, a cross from Garcia found the run of Chris Wondolowski, but the striker's attempt to fire at goal on the volley failed to hit the target.
Jahn almost found a way through the Whitecaps defence when he turned his man on the edge of the penalty area, but his strike was well saved by Ousted.
San Jose took the lead in the 75th minute as Nyassi latched onto a deep cross from Shea Salinas and fired an effort on the volley past the outstretched hand of Ousted.
The match then turned sour for both teams when Jahn and Pedro Morales were dismissed for fighting, leaving both sides with 10 men.
Vancouver pushed for a late equaliser as Octavio Rivero carved out space for a shot, but his effort was well saved by David Bingham to secure the win for the home side.
