Schalke 04 manager Jens Keller has left Tranquillo Barnetta on the bench for his side's opening Bundesliga fixture against Hannover on Saturday afternoon.
Barnetta, who spent last season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, will have to wait to make an impact on his return to the club, and is joined on the bench by Max Meyer.
World Cup winners Julian Draxler and Benedikt Howedes both start for the visitors as Schalke look to recover from the surprise defeat to Dynamo Dresden in the DFB-Pokal.
Hannover welcome summer signing Joselu into the starting lineup following his move from Frankfurt, and the striker will be supported by fellow new arrival Miiko Albornoz and attacking midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt.
Hannover: Zieler; Sakai, Marcelo, Schulz, Pander; Schmiedebach, Andreasen, Bittencourt, Prib; Albornoz, Joselu
Schalke: Fährmann; Ayhan, Howedes, Matip, Kolasinac; Boateng, Neustadter, Sam, Draxler; ChoupoMoting, Huntelaar
