Result: Spain 3-1 Scotland

David Silva scores twice and sets up the other as Spain end Scotland's hopes of grabbing a play-off place for the Euro 2012 finals.

Scotland's hopes of grabbing a Euro 2012 qualifying play-off place were extinguished by world and European champions Spain in Alicante this evening.

Craig Levein's side had to match the result of the Czech Republic in Lithuania to finish second in Group I.

They were behind after only six minutes when Manchester City's David Silva tucked the ball under Allan McGregor from 12 yards.

Vincent del Bosque's side, who finished Group I with a 100% qualifying record, doubled their lead again through Silva who then set up Barcelona striker David Villa for a third.

The visitors did pull a goal back through Blackburn's David Goodwillie from the spot after strike partner Craig Mackail-Smith was brought down by Victor Valdes.

Czech Republic's 4-1 win in Kaunas leaves Scotland two points behind in third place.
