Sevilla moved back into the top four in La Liga by beating Andalusian rivals Malaga 2-0 at the Ramon Sanchez tonight.
Carlos Bacca fired the hosts into a 1-0 lead in a half that saw Unai Emery's side dominate without taking the bulk of their chances.
The Colombian then turned provider and set up Denis Suarez for a wonder goal that helped Sevilla consolidate their lead and leapfrog Valencia into fourth.
Review all of the action with Sports Mole's live text commentary.
Good evening and you're very welcome to our live text commentary of Malaga's trip to in-form Sevilla in the Andalusian derby! I'm Shane and I'll be guiding you through all the action inside Ramon Sanchez tonight. (That's the name of the stadium. I'm not performing an invasive surgery on a man called Ramon Sanchez.)
Right, before we go any further let's look at a bit of team news, shall we? Why not. This is coming up very shortly.
SEVILLA XI: Beto; Figueiras, Carrico, Kolodziejczak, Navarro; Iborra, Krychowiak; Deulofeu, Banega, Reyes, Bacca
MALAGA XI: Kameni; Rosales, Angeleri, Torres, Antunes; Samuel, Recio, Darder, Duda, Castillejo; Amrabat
SEVILLA SUBS: Sergio Rico, Coke, Gameiro, Aspas, Arribas, Vitolo y Denis Suárez.
MALAGA SUBS: Ochoa; Filipenko, Alberto, Guerra, Horta, Juanmi, Tissone
Right, so we'll start with the hosts and I can tell you that Unai Emery makes four changes from that 2-0 win over Almeria last time out. Timothee Kolodziejczak, whose name I can definitely pronounce in real life, is one of two changes in defence, with Diogo Figueiras being the other.
Highly-rated defensive midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak comes back into the fold to partner Vicente Iborra in a holding role, while Ever Banega, Jose Antonio Reyes and Gerard Deulofeu operate in behind Carlos Bacca - no relation to Chew - as the spearhead.
On to Malaga now and Javi Gracia makes no changes from the side that held Villarreal to a 1-1 draw last weekend. Nordin Amrabat continues on as their spearhead, with Samuel, Duda and Castillejo offering support. Further back you'll find Recio and Sergi Darder stationed in front of a defence comprising of Roberto Rosales, Marcos Angeleri, Miguel Torres and Vitorino Antunes. Carlos Kameni continues in nets and that's your lot!
We mentioned that Emery's side were one of the form teams in La Liga at the moment, but how much so? Well, they're on a nine-game unbeaten streak in all competition, with their last defeat coming back in November. In fact, they've only lost two Primera Liga outings since September, which might explain why they're well up there in regards to a top-four finish.
Victory tonight would see the Rojiblancos move above Valencia into fourth place, six points off leaders Real Madrid! You won't find many in Seville dreaming of a league title, but that's how close it is at the top end of Spain's top flight these days, which is great to see in my opinion.
And what about Malaga? Well, they're not in the best of form, but they are seventh, six points off the top four as it stands. They're yet to record a league victory in 2015, drawing one and losing one, and it's not an overstatement to suggest that this is a must-win game as far as their Champions League hopes go. They're having a great season, but defeat would leave them eight points off the top four. Only a win will do I'm afraid.
PREDICTION! Alright then let's get down to business. We're about three minutes from kickoff, so let us get a prediction wrong. I'm going for a 2-2 draw. I think this one comes along at just the right time for Malaga as they look to climb out of the funk they find themselves in, and they'll give Sevilla a very good game here.
KICKOFF!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we're off at Ramon Sanchez. Sevilla, playing in their usual white kit, get us underway. What a big game this is.
Really lively start from the hosts as Gerard Deulofeu wins a corner off Antunes. It comes to nothing, but Sevilla have the chance to throw it back into the box as Malaga deal with it. Fantastic opening three minutes from Unai Emery's side.
The visitors look to have weathered that early storm but we're yet to see a clear goalscoring chance from either side. We will see goals, though. It's inevitable.
What a ball this is. Diogo Figueiras gallops forward from right-back and swings in a wonderful cross for Carlos Bacca, but goalkeeper Carlos Kameni is alert to the danger and plucks the ball from the sky.
BOOKING: Grzegorz Krychowiak is booked for a coming together with Amrabat, and he can have little complaints, despite how early it is. The combative midfielder might've been booked for an earlier foul, but the referee gave him the benefit of the doubt, but he deserved a booking for that last one. Silly.
SHOT! We've seen our first shot, and it's Malaga as Samu Castillejo takes aim from outside the box but, despite connecting with it beautifully, it's never troubling Beto. It's got the makings of a really good game this.
Carlos Bacca won't be short of service tonight, anyway, because Jose Antonio Reyes has just fizzed in another superb cross, but it's too close to Kameni and Bacca can't quite reach it. Between Reyes and Figueiras, Bacca won't go hungry.
Is it just me or is Unai Emery a dead ringer for the bloke out of The Dark Knight and Prisoners? Spitting image. Anyway, Emery is as animated as ever out on that touchline, rallying his troops. He knows the importance of this game.
It's all gone a little quiet, one or two offsides from both sides but the sting has been taken out of it somewhat in recent minutes.
Malaga keeper Kameni took a big risk in catching Rosales's mis-hit clearance there. It was never an intentional back-pass, but you do see some referees penalise players for that.
BOOKING: We've not even had 20 minutes yet and Sevilla already have two players in the book, as Reyes follows Krychowiak into the book for dissent. Suffice to say the home fans are furious.
CHANCE!!!! Bacca could, and definitely should, have fired the hosts ahead here. He has Miguel Torres back-tracking, but the tricky Colombian manages to go through one-on-one with Kameni, but Torres does just enough in the end to put him off and he might've taken the sting out of Bacca's tame shot, which was well saved by the Malaga stopper. Big chance.
The referee has incurred the wrath of the Sevilla fans here once more! Having already booked Reyes and Krychowiak, he has just penalised Bacca for appearing to foul Antunes in the build-up to scoring! He's got a set of stones on him.
Good work from Krychowiak there to eek out Amrabat. He had to, too, or the Argentine was through on Sevilla's defence. Huge.
CHANCE!!!! Sevilla are dominating this one as far as goalscoring chances go, as Deulofeu make a mug of Antunes before fizzing a low cross into the box. The ball reaches Bacca, but it gets caught under the Colombian's feet and Kameni does well to smother the ball.
SAVE!!! Kameni has been by far the busier of both goalkeepers so far, as the African keeper palms away Bacca's first-time shot from outside the box. Very decent save, but had Bacca got more velocity on his shot then it's 1-0. Simple as.
Sevilla are getting so much joy down Malaga's flanks and it's only a matter of time before their dominance on the wings yields some sort of reward. Deulofeu, in particular, has been a thornin Malaga's side so far.
BOOKING: Vicente Iborra goes into the book for a challenge on Sergi Darder I think. That's both of Sevilla's holding midfielders on yellow cards. The win is here for them, but it won't be if they go down to 10 men and that's a real possibility at the moment. They need a session with Jeremy Kyle's aftercare team at half time to curb their anger.
CHANCE!!! We've had to wait 35 minutes for a Malaga shot, and it should've been the opening goal. Navarro inexplicably plays a ball backwards without realising that Duda is lurking, and the former Sevilla man fires at goal from outside the box but it goes just wide. Promising, but it should be 1-0.
GOAL!!!!!!!! SEVILLA 1-0 MALAGA (Carlos Bacca)
Sevilla lead 1-0 as Gerard Deulofeu, who we highlighted as a real threat a moment ago, does really well and dinks a ball over to Bacca, who drills low and hard into the bottom corner from inside the box. Kameni had no chance. A penny for the thoughts of Duda, who missed that chance a few minutes ago for Malaga.
Malaga need a big five minutes before the break because they've been out-played for looooong spells here at Ramon Sanchez. If they could nick a half-time draw it would mean the world to them and take the wind out of Sevilla's sails somewhat.
Two minutes left in the half and Malaga very much in the ascendency, but it looks like we're going in at the break with the solitary goal.
HALF TIME: SEVILLA 1-0 MALAGA
Well, that was a cracking half I must say. Carlos Bacca has fired Sevilla into a 1-0 half-time lead in the Andalusian derby, but it could, and probably should, be about 3-1. Significantly, Bacca's opener came around 40 seconds after Duda missed Malaga's only chance in that half after capitalising on a Navarro error, but he couldn't put it away.
We have to give a doff of the cap to Gerard Deulofeu, who has been excellent so far. He's been at the heart of everything that Sevilla created in that half and poor Antunes just hasn't been able to live with him on that right wing.
Yep, the victory is there for Sevilla - but they have to be careful! They've got three players on bookings, two of which - defensive midfielders Krychowiak and Iborra - have to be extremely mindful of everything they do in this second half. If they keep their heads then Sevilla could end up winning this by three or four.
Anyways, meet me back here in a few minutes for the conclusion. I fancy we'll see a very spicy second half, my friends.
RESTART! Aaaaaaaaaaand we're back underway at Ramon Sanchez ladies and gentlemen. Let's go.
Malaga start the half fairly well but they're yet to really fashion any goalscoring opportunities as of yet.
It's not as fiery as it was in the first half, which is a good thing because the referee's arms is probably in bits after raising his hand so often to dish out the yellows.
Deulofeu fizzes an excellent cross in from a free kick, but Kameni, as he often did in the first half, snuffed out the chance really well. No real goalscoring chances to speak of as yet.
DISALLOWED GOAL! Ever Banega thinks that he's fired Sevilla into a 2-0 lead, but Carlos Bacca, who played the ball across, was offside when Reyes played him through. At least, the linesman says he was offside, but replays looked inconclusive. Big call.
Sevilla keeper Beto is receiving a bit of treatment for a neck injury that he sustained when Javi Guerra bumped into the back of him. Looked a sore one.
It's just gone a little scrappy in the last few minutes. Sevilla are nowhere near as dominant as they were in the first half, and while the score is still just 1-0, Malaga certainly have a chance.
Despite trailing 1-0, Malaga's fans are still in good spirits; singing a few songs, dancing up and down, which is good to see. They can't be a 12th man because there's nowhere enough of them to spur their team on.
GOAL!!!! SEVILLA 2-0 MALAGA (Denis Suarez)
This is a brilliant, brilliant goal and it could be the one that takes Sevilla up to fourth. Suarez picks it up just inside Malaga's half, before embarking on a powerful run from midfield, riding a few challenges before exchanging a neat one-two with Bacca and slotting beyond Kameni. What a brilliant goal.
SUB: Gerard Deulofeu, who has been quiet in this half after a brilliant first 45, makes way for Kevin Gameiro.
We punted for a 2-2 draw prior to kickoff, so Malaga just need to score twice and we're sorted. Will they score twice? Absolutely not. They've done very, very little in the final third, and to score two goals in the final 17 minutes would represent a minor miracle.
CHANCE!! It probably should be 3-0, as Kameni pushes away Bacca's first-time shot. The Colombian has one, but he should have two or three.
Kameni slightly fortunate to avoid a yellow card after aggressively pushing Krychowiak to the ground in retaliation for the Polish midfielder's over-zealous attempts to win an aerial challenge. Surprising to see him get away with it, seen as we've seen pretty soft yellow cards already.
SUB: Samu makes way for Luis Alberto. Let's see if that change sparks Malaga into life. It's unlikely, but they've got very little to loose at this point.
SUB: Another sub now as Liverpool loanee Iago Aspas replaces goalscorer Carlos Bacca for the final 10 minutes. The Colombian gets a good reception as he makes his way off the field.
This one is just petering out a little unfortunately, and understandably, because Sevilla don't need to go forward much, while Malaga are seriously toiling in the final third.
CLOSE! This would've made Sevilla very, very nervous for the past few mintues, as Antunes drills a fine ball across the face of goal, but nobody in blue and white was on hand to convert. You get the feeling that's going to be their last real chance - and it wasn't even a chance really.
Incidentally, Sevilla have not conceded a Liga goal here at the Ramon Sanchez since the end of November, which just about sums up why Malaga have run into so much trouble. They're by no means a bad team, but they're just up against a very, very good defence.
FOUR MINUTES ADDED ON:
SHOT! Luis Alberto takes aim from range, but it's well wide. That sums up their evening, and bizarrely, it's about as close as they've come in this second half.
FULL TIME: SEVILLA 2-0 MALAGA
Well, that's all she wrote, folks. Sevilla move back into the top four, while Malaga now sit EIGHT points off a Champions League spot. You have to fancy that's it for their top-four hopes. Anywho, thanks for joining our live text commentary and we'll see you again soon. Goodnight!
