Sevilla beaten at Athletic Bilbao

Sevilla squander the chance to go top of the La Liga table with a 1-0 defeat away to Athletic Bilbao.

Sevilla missed the chance to go top of the La Liga table by falling to a 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao.

The hosts took the lead on 13 minutes when Aritz Aduriz met Markel Susaeta's cross inside the box to lash a ferocious volley past goalkeeper Beto.

Susaeta almost found the net himself shortly before half time as Bilbao pushed for a second, but his opportunistic effort was kept out by the alert Beto.

Sevilla were much improved after the break as Carlos Bacca and Benoit Tremoulinas both missed the target with shots from long range early on.

Bacca took aim again with just over an hour played, though this time his fierce drive was deflected away for a corner by the dogged Bilbao defence.

Sevilla bombarded their opponents during the final 10 minutes in the hope of leaving with a share of the spoils, but they were unable to find an equaliser.
