Ched Evans to train with Sheffield United

Sheffield United confirm that convicted rapist Ched Evans is to train with the club following a request from the PFA.

Sheffield United have confirmed that convicted rapist Ched Evans is to train with the club.

The 25-year-old was released from prison last month after serving half of his five-year sentence for raping a woman back in 2011.

The Welshman has repeatedly maintained his innocence since being found guilty two years ago.

Evans played for Sheffield United for three years before he was jailed in 2012.

The Blades have revealed that it was the Professional Footballers' Association who wanted Evans to train with the club in order for him to gain fitness.

United say that they believe footballers "should be treated as equals before the law, including in circumstances where they seek to return to work following periods of incarceration". However, they have also made it clear that they fully condemn the crime for which Evans was convicted and do not question his conviction.

"The club condemns rape and violence of any kind against women in the strongest possible terms," read an official statement. "More specifically, the club considers rape, the crime for which Mr Evans was convicted, to be a heinous crime worthy of serious punishment as provided under law. The club has been assured by Mr Evans that he shares these value judgements."

Evans recently posted a video message on his official website claiming that he was eager to return to professional football.
