Jose Fonte: 'Finishing sixth would be massive for Southampton'

Southampton skipper Jose Fonte calls on his side to beat Crystal Palace on the final day of the season and set a new club-record points tally in the Premier League.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte has urged his teammates to "finish the job" in their bid to create a slice of history for the club this season.

The Saints equalled their highest Premier League points tally with a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday, and need to avoid defeat at home to Crystal Palace on the final day to set a new club-record mark.

The win also took Southampton into sixth place in the table, one point above West Ham United, although the Hammers do have a game in hand over Ronald Koeman's side.

"We will not waste this opportunity," Fonte told the club's official website.

"We know we've got to prepare for this very tough game against Crystal Palace and we have to make sure we finish the job.

"We're still in the fight and, if we win against Crystal Palace, I think we have a good chance to finish in sixth, so that would be massive for us."

Southampton could still finish in fifth place should they win on the final day and Manchester United lose their two remaining games.
