Virgil van Dijk pleased to pick up clean sheet on Southampton debut

Van Dijk pleased after Saints debut

Virgil van Dijk was satisfied with Southampton's performance in their 0-0 draw away at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, and was pleased with his first appearance for the club.

The Dutchman joined the Saints from Celtic on deadline day for a reported fee of £11.5m, and was delighted with a clean sheet on his debut.

"For us, the most important thing is to keep a clean sheet," the 24-year-old told Sky Sports. "We have a lot of quality for the team to score a goal but unfortunately it didn't happen."

The Dutchman added: "I am very happy to make my debut in the Premier League. It's always been a dream for me, and as I said, a clean sheet helps a lot for confidence and hopefully we can take this to the next game next week."

Southampton's next game takes place next Saturday against Manchester United, with Ronald Koeman's side currently 11th in the Premier League.
