Southampton and Newcastle United are two clubs that have spent much of their history at the top level of English football, despite both having spells below the Premier League in recent memory.
Therefore, meetings between the Saints and Magpies have been regular over the years, with the two sides squaring off against each other many times, particularly during the Premier League era.
Some of the greatest players to play the game have represented both Southampton and Newcastle over the years – most notably, Newcastle's all-time leading goalscorer Alan Shearer started his professional career with the Saints, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers and then Newcastle in a glittering career.

The visitors have dominated recent encounters against Southampton, winning 12 and losing just one of their last 15 matches in all competitions against the Saints.
The most recent meeting between the two sides was in January 2025, when Newcastle made the long trip to Hampshire and secured all three points against a Southampton side battling against relegation from the Premier League.
The Saints took the lead through Jan Bednarek, but it did not last too long, with a brace from Alexander Isak and a further strike from Sandro Tonali ensuring that the Toon Army secured the victory.
That Newcastle triumph was the second meeting between the two sides in the 2024-25 campaign, as they met each other on the opening day of the season, with Newcastle also victorious that day, courtesy of a goal from Joelinton.
The hosts have not tasted success against the Magpies since November 2020, when Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong were on the scoresheet in a 2-0 success at St Mary's.
Since then, the visitors have enjoyed their encounters with the Hampshire outfit, as the only time that Southampton have prevented Newcastle from beating them in the years since, was a 2-2 draw between the two sides at St James' Park in August 2021.
Callum Wilson put Steve Bruce's Newcastle ahead that day before Mohamed Elyounoussi equalised with 16 minutes remaining to set up a tense finish to the match.
Allan Saint-Maximin looked to have won it for the hosts when he put the Toon Army ahead in stoppage time, but James Ward-Prowse equalised from the penalty spot just minutes later to rescue a point for Southampton.
