Southampton held by 10-man West Ham United

West Ham United earn a draw at Southampton, despite playing much of the second half with 10 men.

Southampton's Champions League pursuit suffered a setback this evening after they were held to a draw by 10-man West Ham United at St Mary's.

Despite Adrian's red card for handling the ball outside the area, the Saints were unable to find a way through after a late onslaught on the Hammers' goal.

Both sides had chances to forge an early lead as Carl Jenkinson cleared a Sadio Mane effort before Morgan Amalfitano saw his rasping drive blocked seconds later.

Florin Gardos's header was blocked on the goalline by Cheikhou Kouyate before Eljero Elia fired narrowly wide of Adrian's goal.

However, the balance of the game changed just after the hour mark when Adrian was given a red card for handling the ball outside his area.

His dismissal led to a barrage of efforts from Southampton as they went in search of a winner.

Graziano Pelle was twice denied by Jussi Jaaskelainen before the Finn produced saves from Jose Fonte and Dusan Tadic in stoppage time.

The Saints were made to settle for a point, which see them drop below Manchester United, but remain in the top four.
