The Saints started on the front foot and twice missed early opportunities to go ahead through Mane, as the winger curled an effort over the bar, before inching an effort wide of the Swansea goal.

Southampton took the lead on 11 minutes, as Virgil van Dijk found the back of the net with a header from a James Ward-Prowse corner.

Swansea came close to scoring when Maarten Stekelenburg parried a strike from Ki Sung-Yeung, but Jose Fonte pounced onto the ball to clear the danger.

Graziano Pelle almost doubled Southampton's lead on 33 minutes, as the Italian striker missed the target with a header from a Tadic cross, before Mane forced a save from Lukasz Fabianski before half time.

After the break Southampton continued to dominate the match, and the home side doubled their lead on 54 minutes as Tadic's shot was deflected off the shin of Ki and into the Swansea goal.

The hosts added their third goal minutes later, as Mane pounced onto a clearance from Ashley Williams to produce a clinical finish past Stekelenburg.

Southampton came close to a fourth goal through Jay Rodriguez, who had a shot cleared off the line, before an Oriol Romeu header was kept out by Fabianski.

Swansea scored a consolation goal on 83 minutes as Fonte brought Neil Taylor down in the penalty area. Gylfi Sigurdsson took the spot kick, and finished past Stekelenburg.
