Jay Rodriguez keen to earn World Cup place

Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez wants to improve his Premier League performance to earn a World Cup call-up next summer.

Jay Rodriguez has said that he is keen to improve in the Premier League in a bid to earn a place in England's World Cup squad.

The Southampton striker was part of Roy Hodgson's side for last month's friendlies against Chile and Germany, earning his first cap in a substitute appearance against the South Americans.

"Obviously it is an honour to play for your country and a confidence boost when you do get selected," the 24-year-old told Sky Sports News.

"It was a nice taste and you obviously want more of it so hopefully I just can just carry on improving and maybe you never know. All you can do is keep your head down at your club. You work as hard as you can to try and improve as a player and hopefully then it pays off.

"I have said to myself I want to improve on last year and hopefully I can carry on improving. I want to score as many as I can in each game, so hopefully I can."

Rodriguez is the club's top scorer so far this season with 10 goals.
