Phil Brown optimistic of Southend United progression

Phil Brown hopes that Southend United can edge a cagey tie with Stevenage and progress into the playoff final after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

Phil Brown is optimistic that his Southend United side can reach the League Two playoff final following their first-leg 1-1 draw at Stevenage on Sunday.

Dean Parrett opened the scoring for the hosts on 51 minutes before Barry Corr equalised on the hour mark to leave the tie wide open ahead of Thursday's return leg.

"It was pure commitment from both teams and you will get that again on Thursday," he told Sky Sports News.

"There was a little bit of quality at times and we just edged it in terms of chances and possession, but it's 1-1, we go back to Roots Hall and hopefully do the job."

The winner of the tie will face either Wycombe or Plymouth Argyle at Wembley.
