Roy Hodgson hints at Harry Kane starting berth for Lithuania qualifier

Roy Hodgson hopes that Harry Kane can go on to become an established England international, having named the Tottenham Hotspur youngster in his latest Three Lions squad.

England manager Roy Hodgson has hinted that he could hand Harry Kane a starting spot in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania later this month.

The 21-year-old Tottenham Hotspur striker was rewarded for his impressive form at club level by being named in the Three Lions senior squad for the first time earlier today.

Kane, who has scored 26 goals in 42 appearances for Spurs this term, must now battle against established names such as Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck for a place in the starting lineup, but Hodgson has told the youngster that he has full faith in his ability to succeed on the international stage.

"I think the whole country is excited about Harry," he told reporters. "His rise has been fantastic this season. It would have been a surprise if he wasn't selected. We hope he can establish himself.

"I'd be disappointed if there was anyone on this list who I didn't have the confidence or courage to ask to play in [the game against Lithuania].

"When you're there you're good enough but there is competition for places. The first thing is to break into squad and then stay there. We've playing well and it is not as easy as newcomer saying 'I'm here step aside'. The others won't want to step aside."

As well as taking on Lithuania in their latest Euro 2016 Group E qualifier, England also face Italy in a friendly in Turin.
