Spurs transfer news: Ex-scout believes club will not bid for England international

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur scout Mick Brown believes the club will not make a move for Lille and England midfielder Angel Gomes when the transfer window reopens.

Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to enter the market for Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, according to one of their former scouts.

After failing to make the grade at Manchester United, Gomes moved to Lille in 2020, and after a loan spell at Boavista, has now become a regular with Les Dogues.

The 24-year-old has now come to prominence with the England senior side, after interim boss Lee Carsley handed him an opportunity after working with Gomes at youth level.

Gomes made his England debut in the win over Ireland last month, before making his first start a few days later against Finland.

In the reverse clash with the Finns in Helsinki on Sunday, Gomes was lauded for his performance, which included a clever through ball which was eventually finished by Jack Grealish for the game's opener.

Spurs to pass up the chance to sign Gomes?

Those performances with England, and for Lille, who have made headlines in the Champions League already this season, have seen Gomes's stock rise, and a move back to the Premier League could be forthcoming.

However, speaking to Football Insider, former Spurs scout Mick Brown claims he would be surprised if they are the team that goes in for the Lille midfielder.

Justifying his thoughts, Brown said: "They've already got James Maddison who can play a similar role. I would see those two as being not too dissimilar.

"I know Gomes plays a bit deeper but we've seen Maddison drop into that space in recent games. They're both players who want to see a lot of the ball and look to make things happen, they're clever passers and good in possession.

"I'd be surprised if Tottenham made a move for Gomes because of that." Brown revelaed.

Are Spurs better off spending elsewhere?

Instead of spending a decent chunk of their available transfer budget on Gomes, Spurs could choose to improve other areas of the pitch in need of more urgent upgrades and strengthening.

Despite breaking their transfer record to buy Dominic Solanke over the summer, Ange Postecoglou is still short of out-and-out strikers, with Richarlison injured and seemingly out of favour.

However, the most glaring issue remains their defence, because even though their first-choice back four is strong enough for where they want to be, there is not much behind that.

The jury is still out on whether Djed Spence will make it at Tottenham, while Radu Dragusin showed he needs more time to settle with his messy sending off against Qarabag, and after their collapse at Brighton & Hove Albion last time out, there is nothing to suggest their current back four are safe in the side either.
