Jamie Redknapp feels that Tottenham Hotspur have to keep Gareth Bale at the club next season if they are to progress under Andre Villas-Boas.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp feels that Spurs have to do their utmost to keep Gareth Bale at the club.

Andre Villas-Boas's side missed out on Champions League football next season despite beating Sunderland 1-0 on the final day of the campaign.

The Welshman has been linked with moves away from White Hart Lane, but Redknapp insists the club have to do all in their power to keep him.

Redknapp wrote in his column in the Daily Mail: "Spurs have to keep Gareth Bale. He's scored 21 goals this season and nine from outside the box, the highest total of long range goals in Europe's top leagues.

"He deserves Champions League football but I hope he is patient and that Tottenham push the boat out for him now."

Tottenham ended the season in fifth place in the Premier League and will play in the Europa League in 2013-14.
