Andros Townsend enjoying "fantastic form"

England's newest cap Andros Townsend insists that he must now maintain a "fantastic" start to the season after scoring on his international debut last night.

England winger Andros Townsend has declared that he will strive to maintain a breakthrough start to the season, after scoring from range on his international debut last night.

Townsend struck with a fierce drive from distance to help England secure a 4-1 win over Montenegro at Wembley, keeping their World Cup qualifying campaign firmly on track.

Following that goal Townsend has insisted that his direct style can continue to cause problems for club and country, while putting his rise to prominence down to a productive loan spell with Queens Park Rangers.

He told ITV Sport: "On a personal level it was great debut for me to have a hand in the first goal, then score the third goal myself.

"There was runners off me I think I was getting shouts to pass it but I'm a direct player I chose to take the shot, luckily this time it's gone in.

"The last six months of last season when I went down to QPR, I think that was a make or break for me. It turned out well and I've started this season in fantastic form for Tottenham Hotspur. I've got to keep it going now."

The 22-year-old will now fight to keep his place in Roy Hodgson's side for Tuesday's final qualifier, which comes at home to Poland.
