Michael Owen "reduced to tears" following retirement announcement

Michael Owen says that he has been "reduced to tears" after announcing plans to retire at the end of the season.

Michael Owen has admitted that he has been "reduced to tears" following the reaction to his decision to hang up his boots at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old announced his intention to retire this morning, stating that it was the "right time" to call it quits on his career.

Owen wrote on Twitter: "I'm overwhelmed. So many nice messages. Having known it for a while I thought I would be ok. Reduced to tears watching @SkySportsNews!"

The former England striker represented the colours of Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Stoke City throughout his career.
