Stoke City claim third place in Premier League Asia Trophy with routine win

Stoke City beat Singha All Star XI 2-0 in Singapore to claim third place in the Premier League Asia Trophy.

Stoke City have claimed third place in the Premier League Asia Trophy thanks to a 2-0 win over Singha All Star XI in Singapore.

The Potters took the lead with just seven minutes on the clock when Steve Sidwell poked home after Peter Crouch had headed a cross towards goal.

Mark Hughes's side continued to threaten after that, with Peter Odemwingie firing wide before Marko Arnautovic saw a goal ruled out for offside.

Singha's best opening of the first half arrived in stoppage time as Safuwan Baharudin found himself one on one with Shay Given, but the midfielder's tame effort went the wrong side of the post.

Stoke missed the chance to extend their advantage early in the second half when substitute Mame Biram Diouf shot straight at goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud after racing through on goal.

With opportunities hard to come by, the Premier League side made it 2-0 with just under 20 minutes to go as Arnautovic showed quick feet inside the box before calmly slotting the ball home.

Stoke could have had more goals during the final stages of the match, but Odemwingie was denied twice by Mahbud before Stephen Ireland blazed over the crossbar.
