Sunderland manager David Moyes has revealed that goalkeeper Vito Mannone will undergo a scan on an arm injury.
The 28-year-old sustained the injury in training, and Sunderland are concerned that he may have fractured his elbow, which could keep him sidelined for a substantial period.
Mannone will now miss Sunderland's EFL Cup clash against Shrewsbury Town on Wednesday night, with Jordan Pickford expected to start in his place.
"Vito has a problem with his elbow that we're worried about and he will have it checked out," Moyes told reporters.
Depending on the extent of the injury, Mannone could return in time to face Southampton this weekend.
