Chris Coleman: 'Sunderland still have mountains to climb'

Chris Coleman is happy with the "incredible welcome" shown to him by the Sunderland fans but insists that there are still "mountains to climb" in a bid to secure safety.

Chris Coleman has praised the "incredible welcome" bestowed upon him by the Sunderland fans but insists that there are still "mountains to climb" in a bid to secure safety.

The former Wales boss, who took the reins at the Stadium of Light this month, has overseen one win and one defeat in his opening two matches in charge of the Black Cats.

When asked by Sky Sports News about the support he has received since his appointment, Coleman said: "Fantastic. Incredible welcome they have given me. Although I haven't got any promises for anyone.

"[However] I am totally committed to Sunderland and ecstatic to be here - I really am. Whatever I have got I will give to them [the fans]. I can't give any more than what I have got, but I will make sure they get everything out of me. If they are happy for me to be here then I promise you it is not half as happy as I am to be here.

"I don't want everyone to think that overnight this team has all the answers all of a sudden - we have won one game and everything is rosy in the garden, because it is not. We have still got mountains to climb yet. I am certainly not put off by that."

Up next for Sunderland is a Championship home game against Reading on Saturday.
