Jermain Defoe: 'I can score every game'

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe says that he believes he can score in "every" game for the Black Cats.

Sunderland forward Jermain Defoe has said that he believes he can score in "every" game as he looks to steer the Black Cats away from relegation troubles.

The 34-year-old has scored eight of his side's 14 league goals this term, including in each of three key wins in the last month to move them within a whisker of safety for the first time.

"I feel good," Defoe told talkSPORT. "It's probably the sharpest and strongest I've felt for a long time.

"I feel confident and you believe every chance you get you are going to score. At the minute that's my mindset and I just can't wait until the next game. I feel that every time I play I'm going to score."

Defoe also spoke up in support of manager David Moyes, who had come under some pressure until the club's turnaround in form.

"The manager is experienced. he's been there and done it," he added. "We didn't have the best of starts but he was always relaxed in training.

"Every day he's wanted to improve the team, we've worked a lot on possession, he keeps saying 'we need to keep the ball better'. In terms of possession, moving the ball about and making chances, Leicester (a 2-1 win last weekend) was the best we've played. That's come thanks to the training we have done."

Sunderland will aim to get another three points under their belt when they travel to rock-bottom Swansea City on Saturday.
