The 28-year-old, who can operate on either wing, joined up with the Black Cats on their pre-season tour of Italy before completing his move on Tuesday.
The club's official website has revealed that the two-time Serie A winner has committed his future to the English outfit for the next four years.
It is believed that the Premier League club have parted with £8.5m for his services.
