Sunderland winger Emmanuele Giaccherini has admitted that he was surprised by his sudden omission from the Italy squad in the build-up to the World Cup.
The 29-year-old had been an international regular until he was left out of the Azzurri side for the March friendlies, and he did not regain his place for Brazil 2014.
There are no feelings of bitterness for Giaccherini, who wishes his compatriots all possible success this summer but hopes to earn himself a recall after the tournament.
He told the Sunderland Echo: "I was getting called up into the national team until March. It's normal that I expected to be in Prandelli's 30, but the boss made his assessments and I always thank him for what he has done for me.
"I'm a bit disappointed because everyone wants to play in the World Cup, but, even though I won't be on the pitch, I will cheer for Italy and always support the Azzurri.
"I do hope to get back into the national team. For me, it's an honour."
Giaccherini has scored three goals in 18 Italy appearances since debuting while at Juventus in 2012.
