Swindon Town assistant manager Mark Cooper will take charge of the club's first league match of the season against Peterborough United on Saturday.
The 44-year-old, who was named caretaker boss following the departure of Kevin MacDonald last month, started his managerial career at Tamworth.
"All of a sudden we are five days away from the season and they're saying 'get on with it, you're in charge on Saturday'," he told BBC Sport.
It is believed that Swindon hope to have a permanent manager in place next week.
