Swindon Town move fifth with win over Notts County

Swindon climb into the League One playoff places courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Notts County, who remain in the relegation zone, at the County Ground.

First-half goals from Nile Ranger and Dany N'Guessan have given Swindon Town a 2-0 victory over Notts County tonight, a result that sends them into the League One playoff places.

The Robins, unbeaten at home this season, were dominant from start to finish and opened the scoring after just 11 minutes courtesy of Ranger's header.

He met a corner from Tottenham Hotspur loanee Alex Pritchard and glanced the ball inside the far post, despite Mustapha Dumbiya's best attempt at a goalline clearance.

Notts right-back Dumbiya was involved in Swindon's second too, as he tripped Nathan Byrne with a sliding challenge near the byline to hand the hosts the chance of a second from the penalty spot.

N'Guessan took the opportunity to increase his side's lead and move to the top of the club's scoring charts with his fourth goal in five games, and his sixth in total since joining Town on a free transfer from Millwall.

The Magpies had a spot kick of their own in the second period after the lively Callum McGregor drew a foul from Yaser Kasim, but Danny Haynes blasted over the crossbar from 12 yards.

That was one of few lifelines that Notts had to work their way back into the game, as it was Swindon who threatened to add to the scores in the second period.

Kasim, Ranger and Massimo Luongo were all denied by visiting goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski, while Byrne struck the post in the latter stages, as Swindon had to settle for a two-goal winning margin.

The victory sees Swindon climb to fifth in the League One table, but Notts remain in the relegation zone.
