Marseille grab late equaliser against Toulouse

Lucas Mendes scores an 87th-minute header to ensure that Marseille leave Toulouse with a point in Ligue 1.

A superb team goal by Toulouse was cancelled out by Lucas Mendes's 87th-minute header, as the Marseille left it late to grab an equaliser at the Municipal Stadium.

Jeremy Morel came close to giving the away side the lead in the sixth minute in the Ligue 1 contest, but Clement Chantome, on loan from the French champions Paris Saint-Germain, made a superb goalline clearance.

Dimitri Payet should have given Marseille the lead after 35 minutes, but the winger delayed his effort for too long and the chance went begging.

Marseille continued to push for a goal after the break and came close to taking the lead on the hour mark when Mendes headed Mathieu Valbuena's corner goalwards, but his effort was cleared off the line.

The opener came in the 66th minute and it was well worth waiting for. Oscar Trejo span on the ball 25 yards out and picked out Martin Braithwaite with a defence-splitting through-ball.

The striker could easily have had an effort himself, but he had the presence of mind to square the ball to the onrushing Ben Yedder, who gratefully tapped into an unguarded net.

Marseille continued to push and probe in search of an equaliser, and Aymen Abdennour made a superb clearance in the 77th minute as the away side flooded the box with numbers.

With the hosts close to victory, Mendes, who was imperious in the air all afternoon, craned his neck to force a wonderful header into the far corner of the net to snatch a point for his side.
