Arsene Wenger 'mulls move for Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand'

Rio Ferdinand has emerged as a surprise target for Arsenal this summer, according to reports.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly interested in a shock move for Rio Ferdinand this summer, should he decide to leave Manchester United.

The former England international had been thought to be contemplating retirement earlier in the season, but is now rumoured to be keen to prolong his career and the Gunners are interested in offering the defender a contract, The Mirror claims.

However, Ferdinand is said to want a new contact from United and while interim boss Ryan Giggs wants to offer the player a deal, the reported manager-in-waiting, Louis van Gaal, would delay any decision until he arrived at Old Trafford.

It is rumoured that as many as 12 clubs are interested in the centre-back, but that Wenger sees his experience as a potentially crucial addition, should he move to the Emirates Stadium.
