Michail Antonio's record vs. Watford

Ahead of West Ham United's Premier League clash against Watford on Tuesday, Sports Mole takes a look at Michail Antonio's record against the Hornets.

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio is in contention to feature against Watford in Tuesday night's Premier League clash at the London Stadium.

The 31-year-old missed last weekend's FA Cup fourth-round win away at Kidderminster Harriers, as he only returned from international duty with Jamaica just over 24 hours before kickoff.

David Moyes has since confirmed that Antonio has had a couple of days training and he should be fit to play in midweek for the Champions League hopefuls, who are seeking to bounce back from two successive league defeats with a victory against the Hornets.

Antonio, who has scored nine goals across all competitions this season, will be looking to reach double figures with another strike against Watford, a team who he has had plenty of joy against over the years.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the Jamaican's record against the Hornets.

Antonio has faced Watford 15 times in his professional career across all competitions, nine for West Ham in the Premier League as well as two games each for Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest in the Championship.

The Jamaican has been on the winning side seven times in those matches and has racked up a total of seven goals, netting more against the Hornets than any other opponent in his career. Antonio has also provided five assists, which can only be bettered against Crystal Palace with eight.

Earlier in his career, Antonio operated as a full-back and a winger, predominantly the latter, and he was not recognised as the clinical goalscorer that he is today with the Hammers.

He failed to find the net for Reading in his two brief substitute appearances against the Hornets back in 2010 and 2012, but for both Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest, he had more success in front of goal.

In the 2012-13 campaign, Antonio netted in both games for Wednesday against Watford, albeit both matches ending in defeat, before scoring a brace for Forest two seasons later, cancelling out strikes from Odion Ighalo and Matej Vydra to help rescue a 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road.

After just one season at Forest, Antonio moved to West Ham where he has since transformed into a centre-forward and is now the club's all-time record goalscorer in the Premier League, with 54 strikes in 181 top-flight appearances.

For the Hammers, Antonio has scored three goals and provided five assists in nine league games against Watford, failing to contribute to a goal on just two of these occasions.

In his first top-flight game against the Hornets, Antonio was awarded an assist in a 3-1 home win in April 2016, after being fouled inside the penalty area, with club captain Mark Noble dispatching the resulting spot kick.

The following season, just five months later, Antonio scored twice in West Ham's 4-2 defeat at the London Stadium, before being sent off for two bookable offences in the reverse fixture, which finished 1-1; this match turned out to be the beginning of a five-game goal drought for the striker against the Hornets.

However, Antonio was able to provide three assists during this period, setting up the opener for Javier Hernandez in a 2-0 home victory in October 2018, as well as registering two assists for Noble in a comfortable 4-1 win at Vicarage Road in December 2019.

Antonio's most recent goal against Watford was a low-driven left-footed strike to open the scoring after just six minutes in a 3-1 home win in July last season. With only an assist to his name against the Hornets this term, in a 4-1 away victory in December, the Jamaican will be keen to get his name back on the scoresheet in midweek as he edges towards double figures for the third time in his Premier League career with the Hammers.
