Sheffield United knock out West Ham United

Sheffield United beat West Ham United 5-4 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw in the second round of the League Cup.

Sheffield United have booked their place in their third round of the League Cup following a 5-4 penalty-shootout victory over West Ham United, after their match had finished in a 1-1 draw.

West Ham had the first chance of the match when Ricardo Vaz Te headed Guy Demel's cross wide of the post, before Ravel Morrison fired a strike over the bar.

They continued to dominate and Enner Valencia saw his long-range effort saved by Mark Howard.

Valencia came close again on the half-hour mark when he was sent through on goal by Mohamed Diame, but the keeper got down low to save his strike.

Morrison was the next to threaten for the Hammers minutes later with a curling free kick that Howard tipped around the post, and from the resulting corner Reece Burke saw his volley saved by the keeper.

The hosts finally made their pressure count by taking the lead five minutes before the break when Diafra Sakho headed in from Burke's cross.

Despite West Ham's dominance, the visitors levelled in the 58th minute when Winston Reid turned the ball into his own net.

Stewart Downing saw a strike tipped over the bar by Howard, before the keeper saved a low strike from Mauro Zarate, as the game ended level after 90 minutes.

The Hammers looked the side most likely to score in extra time, but they could not find the net and the game headed to a penalty shootout.

Both teams scored with their first four spot kicks of the evening until Valencia saw his effort saved by Howard.

That miss gave Michael Doyle the chance to win the match with his penalty, and he made no mistake with a strike into the bottom corner to send Sheffield United through.
