Millwall claim vital win over Wigan Athletic

Carlos Edwards scores the only goal of the game as Millwall defeat Wigan Athletic 1-0.

Millwall secured a vital 1-0 victory over playoff-chasing Wigan Athletic in the Championship this evening.

The Lions took the lead in the 22nd minute when Carlos Edwards picked up Nicky Bailey's pass inside the box and rifled an effort beyond Scott Carson in the Latics goal.

Wigan almost registered an immediate response as a James McClean effort sailed high and wide, while Nicky Maynard was unable to find the target from inside the box in the 33rd minute.

Uwe Rosler's side almost drew level on the stroke of half time as Jack Collison gained possession inside the area, but was unable to find a way past David Forde in the Millwall goal.

It was a similar story in the second period as Wigan piled on the pressure, coming within inches of drawing level in the 75th minute when Collison found space in the box, but shot wide.

Emmerson Boyce almost netted the elusive equaliser for the Latics in stoppage time, but Forde pulled off heroics and help his side to a much-needed win.
