Wigan Athletic open League One account

Goals from Will Grigg, Donervon Daniels and Craig Davies help Wigan thump Scunthorpe 3-0 for their first League One win of the 2015-16 campaign.

Wigan Athletic thumped Scunthorpe United 3-0 at the DW Stadium tonight to register their first victory of the League One season.

Mark Robins's pre-match plan was thrown into disarray after just three minutes when Will Grigg converted a penalty for his first Wigan goal - and their first of the season.

Gary Caldwell's side continued to push forward as they looked determined to build on their fast and furious start and boost their hopes of a maiden win in England's third tier this season.

A second nearly came on the 19-minute mark when midfielder Michael Jacobs galloped toward goal, but his 25-yard strike sailed narrowly over the bar.

Craig Davies - one of two changes made to the first XI - came agonisingly close on 26 minutes, before they found their second a minute later.

Donervon Daniels - the other change made by Caldwell - slammed the ball home from close range a minute later for what was also his first strike in a Wigan shirt.

Jacobs struck the bar in the closing seconds of the first period, before David Perkins poked just wide of the mark on 67 minutes as Wigan looked in rampant mood.

Davies continued to threaten in his No.9 role, and he got his reward on 70 minutes by latching on to Grigg's ball to slot past Joe Anyon and get Athletic off the mark following their demotion last term.
