Ali Al-Habsi, Marc-Antoine Fortune among Wigan Athletic players to be released

Wigan Athletic announce the release of five senior players, including goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi and striker Marc-Antoine Fortune.

League One side Wigan Athletic have announced that five senior players, including Ali Al-Habsi and Marc-Antoine Fortune, will not have their contracts renewed this summer.

Goalkeeper Al-Habsi and striker Fortune join Kim Bo-Kyung, Gaetan Bong and William Kvist in being released.

New contracts have, or shortly will be, offered to Jermaine Pennant, Emmerson Boyce, Jordan Flores, Tim Chow, Matty Hamilton and Ryan Jennings.

The club have also presented professional terms to six academy players for next season.

Juan Carlos Garcia has not been included in the list of players under contract for next season, but he remains tied to the club as he recovers from leukaemia.

"[Garcia] is being constantly monitored both by the club's medical staff and doctors at Christie Hospital in Manchester," read a club statement.

"The club will continue to support Juan Carlos in every way we can as he recovers from his serious illness."

2013 FA Cup winners Wigan suffered their second relegation in three seasons by finishing 23rd in the Championship this term on 39 points, seven adrift of safety.
