Roberto Martinez expects James McCarthy to stay at Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez admits that he expects James McCarthy to eventually leave the DW Stadium for a bigger club, but he is adamant that the midfielder will stay with the Latics in January.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has admitted that he expects midfielder James McCarthy to eventually leave the DW Stadium for a bigger club.

However, the Latics boss insists that the 22-year-old will not be moving during the upcoming January transfer window.

He said: "James will stay until he knows he's ready. He's level-headed. There's a right time and wrong time to leave - he's at the right club."

McCarthy, who joined Wigan from Hamilton for a fee of £1.1m in July 2009, has been capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland at senior international level.
