Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking: 'We have sent a message to Champions League'

Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking says that his team "sent a message" to their Champions League opponents by defeating Manchester United.

Wolfsburg head coach Dieter Hecking has claimed that his side's victory over Manchester United has "sent a message" to their fellow Champions League opponents.

The German outfit topped Group B by seeing off United in a dramatic 3-2 victory at the Volkswagen Arena on Tuesday night.

The result means that Wolfsburg qualify for the last 16 for the first time in their history, while United drop out of the competition and into the Europa League.

"Congratulations to my team - they did a lot of what we had planned," Hecking told reporters. "We saw a great game, with everything at stake.

"We had a bit of luck at times, but you need that when you are playing a quality side like Manchester United.

"When I see who came second in their groups - Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Benfica - they are big teams, but we are also good and we've sent a message to the Champions League tonight. We've got to take it as it comes. We have a chance so we want to take it."

PSV Eindhoven qualified from the group in second.
