Nicklas Bendtner: 'Wolfsburg can compete with Bayern Munich'

Nicklas Bendtner says that Wolfsburg have proven that they can compete with Bayern Munich following their Supercup victory on Saturday night.

Wolfsburg striker Nicklas Bendtner has insisted that his side can challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title this season.

The Wolves began their campaign by winning a penalty shootout against the German champions in the DFL-Supercup on Saturday evening, after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Bendtner, who found the net for his side during the 90 minutes and scored the winning penalty in the shootout, believes that the performance from Wolfsburg has shown that they can enjoy a successful campaign.

"It's good that we've proven at such an early stage of the season that we can compete with the likes of Bayern Munich, because early on in this game they could probably have been ahead by one or maybe even two-nil, but they didn't take their chances," he told the Bundesliga's official website.

"We had big chances ourselves through Kevin [De Bruyne] and Bas [Dost], which we didn't make the most of, but realistically they probably should have been ahead in the first half.

"As I said, we kept believing and when we needed that moment of belief [for a goal] to come off, and it did. Then we needed a goalkeeper who had to save a penalty, which he did, and then we needed five guys to score from the spot. Every penalty was really well taken."

Bendtner scored five goals for Wolfsburg last season.
