Bas Dost clinches Wolfsburg win in nine-goal thriller with Bayer Leverkusen

Bas Dost scores his fourth goal in the final minute of stoppage time as Wolfsburg beat Bayer Leverkusen 5-4 in a thrilling Bundesliga match at the BayArena.

It could have been a very different story had Leverkusen took the first chance of the game in the third minute, but Diego Benaglio reacted well to keep out Karim Bellarabi's effort from the edge of the box.

Wolfsburg broke the deadlock just three minutes later when Vieirinha curled an inviting cross onto the head of Dost, who dived in to head home at the back post.

Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno was powerless to keep out the opener, but was left frustrated when a powerful Naldo free kick slipped through his hands as Wolfsburg continued to dominate.

It was 3-0 before the half-hour mark as Kevin De Bruyne found the space in the final third to pick out Dost, and the forward showed great awareness to beat Leno with a clever flicked finish.

Wolfsburg should have scored a fourth before the break, but Andre Schurrle could only fire over after latching onto a loose ball in the box.

Leverkusen boss Roger Schmidt was quick to respond to their abject first-half display as he made three changes at the interval to bring off Lars Bender, Hakan Calhanoglu and Stefan Kiessling.

There would be a reaction from Leverkusen early in the second half, and they were offered a glimmer of hope when Benaglio spilled a Julian Brandt effort to allow Son Heung-min to tap home from close range.

Benaglio struggled to recover from the error, and his decision to sprint off the line when Son latched onto a long ball led to the Leverkusen forward finding the bottom corner to raise hopes of a dramatic comeback.

However, a spell of three goals in six minutes ended with Wolfsburg pulling two goals clear once again through Dost, who completed his hat-trick by converting from Ricardo Rodriguez's cross.

A dramatic afternoon continued when Son scored his third goal in the space of 10 minutes to reduce the deficit with a powerful strike after cutting inside from the right.

Leverkusen completed the staggering turnaround as Bellarabi made it 4-4 with a calm finish, after timing his run perfectly to sprint clear of the Wolfsburg defence.

The pressure was back on Leverkusen with nine minutes of normal time remaining when Emir Spahic was sent off for a second bookable offence.

It looked as though Leverkusen would hold on for a point until the final moments when Dost beat Leno to Vieirinha's cross to clinch the win for his side on a dramatic afternoon at the BayArena.
