Danny Batth, Frank Nouble and Bakary Sako scored their first goals for Wolverhampton Wanderers as the Championship side overcame Northampton Town at Sixfields to reach the third round of the League Cup.

Stale Solbakken's men took the lead in fortuitous circumstances on 16 minutes when Batth - making his first Wolves appearances in over two years - inadvertently found the bottom corner with his shin following a goalmouth scramble.

Clive Platt headed home his first goal for the Cobblers five minutes before half-time. However, the visitors were back ahead in first-half stoppage time as Nouble latched onto Anthony Forde's pass before finishing powerfully from six yards.

Slawomir Peszko almost sealed the win late in the second half, but his close-range volley was excellently deflected wide by Joe Widdowson.

Substitute Sako did finally end the match as a contest in stoppage time, as the recent signing from Saint-Etienne hammed home from 25 yards.
