Saying that it hasn't been the best of seasons for Wolverhampton Wanderers is quite possibly the understatement of the century.

The club sacked Mick McCarthy in February after a poor run of results, and hoped that assistant Terry Connor would lead them to Premier League survival.

It wasn't to be, however, and they will play Championship football next season after finishing bottom of the Premier League table.

With that in mind, Sports Mole has reviewed what turned out to be a disappointing campaign from the Midlands club.

August

The club made some start to the Premier League season, picking up successive wins against Blackburn Rovers and Fulham, while they advanced in the League Cup with victory over Northampton Town.

The month also ended on a high, with an away draw to Aston Villa ending an extremely successful opening month to the season for McCarthy's side.

September

September brought disappointment, however, with consecutive losses at home to Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers, while they lost 2-1 at Anfield, albeit with an impressive performance from the club.

Their solid cup form continued as they beat Millwall 5-0 at Molineux, but league results began to drop after a strong start to the campaign.

October

October proved to be the hardest month for the club thusfar, with an opening loss to Newcastle United, while they also lost at West Bromwich Albion after the international break.

They did gain a welcome point in a 2-2 draw with Swansea City, but received nothing from a trip to an impressive Manchester City at the end of the month.

They were also dumped out of the Carling Cup by Roberto Mancini's side, losing 5-2 at home in a comprehensive loss.

November

November started in the best possible way, with victory over Wigan Athletic, but they received nothing from their next two league encounters, losing away to Everton and away to Chelsea as they threatened to occupy the relegation zone.

There were also concerns over the form of skipper Roger Johnson, who was dropped for a period by McCarthy.

December

The month began with a solid 2-1 win over a struggling Sunderland, but back-to-back losses to Manchester United and Stoke City continued their patchy early season form.

They managed just three points in the Christmas period, although they did secure a point at Arsenal, which boosted their confidence ahead of the New Year.

January

The month began with a demoralising loss against Chelsea, when they had performed well, but they did gain a point away to Tottenham half-way through the month.

The second half of the month proved to be a disappointing one, however, as they were dumped out of the FA Cup by rivals Birmingham City, and lost more points in the Premier League with defeats to Aston Villa and Liverpool.

February

McCarthy begun the month with a fine 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers, but his fate was sealed when the club lost 5-1 to West Bromwich Albion at home.

Assistant Terry Connor was given the position, and his reign got off to the best possible start as the club came from 2-0 down to secure a point against Newcastle United.

Key striker Steven Fletcher also remained among the goals, but there was to be few from a poor Kevin Doyle.

March

March proved to be quite possibly the worst in the club's history, with five straight defeats, with losses to fellow strugglers Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers among the most damaging.

April

April proved to be just as disappointing, with defeats to Stoke City and Arsenal early in the month. They did gain a welcome point away to Sunderland on April 14, but their Championship fate was sealed one week later with a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

In truth, it had been coming, but they did show heart and desire to come from behind to secure a point against Swansea City at the end of the month.

May

May began with their second straight draw as they held Everton at Molineux, but the search for an elusive win under Connor's reign proved fruitless as they fell to a 3-2 loss at Wigan on their final day as a Premier League club.
