The Football Association reveals why Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha only received a two-match ban for an incident involving a member of Ipswich Town's security staff.

The Football Association has revealed why Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha only received a two-match ban for his part in an incident against Ipswich Town.

On December 14, the Tractor Boys scored a last-gasp winner to prevail 2-1 at Molineux, ultimately condemning Gary O'Neil to the sack less than 24 hours later.

In the aftermath of the defeat, Cunha was involved in an argument with a member of Ipswich's security staff, the Brazil international shown to have ripped the glasses from the man's face.

Although Cunha was ultimately charged for improper conduct by the FA, Wolves' appeal led to the player controversially playing three times before his punishment was decided.

As per the written reasons revealed by the governing body, it has been revealed that the ban was reduced from three games to two, as well as the reason why it took the timeframe that it did to subsequently prevent Cunha from continuing to help Wolves' survival bid.

What has the FA said?

The FA has revealed that Cunha wrote a handwritten apology to the person involved, as well as offered to pay for a new pair of glasses.

Furthermore, it is said that Cunha's previous good disciplinary record was taken into consideration. In 68 Premier League appearances, he has received 11 yellow cards.

Over two weeks were taken before a punishment was determined because of what the FA describing it as being a "non-standard case" without a set sanction.

Cunha starred as Wolves accumulated seven points from three matches versus Leicester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, contributing two goals and one assist.

The regulatory commission did not convene until December 30, a day after the showdown with Spurs.

When officially commenting on the incident, Cunha said: "In the heat of the moment I regrettably reached out and grabbed his glasses.

"I know I was wrong to do this and I take full responsibility for my actions."

When will Cunha return?

Cunha sustained a hamstring injury during the draw with Spurs, being withdrawn at half time. Therefore, he would likely have been unavailable for Monday's Premier League game with Nottingham Forest.

He remains suspended for Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie at Bristol City and is currently in line to return against Newcastle United on January 15.
