Villarreal head coach Marcelino comments on speculation that the La Liga outfit could attempt to re-sign Goncalo Guedes during the January transfer window.

Villarreal head coach Marcelino has attempted to play down speculation linking the club with Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Goncalo Guedes.

The Yellow Submarine have enjoyed an outstanding start to the new campaign, sitting in fourth position in the La Liga table.

A total of 23 goals and 24 points have been recorded from 12 matches, Villarreal trailing second-placed Real Madrid by just the three points.

Having missed out on European football for 2024-25, the charge is now on to earn a return for next season, preferably in the Champions League.

However, while Villarreal have had few issues with scoring regular goals, just one of their players - Ayoze Perez - has netted more than times in Spain's top flight.

Guedes reunion in the offing?

As per Cadena Ser, Villarreal are ready to consider a reunion with Guedes, who ended the last campaign on loan.

The Portugal international contributed three goals and two assists from 17 league outings, his efforts enough to tempt Wolves into retaining his services.

Nevertheless, the 27-year-old is back enduring a frustrating period at Molineux having been restricted to eight substitute outings in the Premier League.

With Wolves out of the EFL Cup, Guedes faces the prospect of a prolonged period among the replacements unless he is able to make an impact on an appearance from the bench.

Just 122 minutes have been accumulated during those aforementioned outings, albeit with 42 of them coming in the last two games with an assist being provided during the 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace.

When quizzed on the matter of re-signing Guedes by Movistar Plus, Marcelino said: "It's still early for that. As the season goes on, we will see if there is a need, more based on injuries than performance.

"In attack we haven't yet been able to count on Gerard [Moreno], although we hope he returns and gives us a great performance. Together with the club and the medical staff we will see how the injured are and we will assess."

Would O'Neil consider a sale?

Although Gary O'Neil has regularly turned to Guedes when requiring some inspiration from the substitutes' bench, it is clear that he is no closer to making regular starts.

As a result of two-and-a-half years still remaining on his contract, Wolves do not have to be in a rush to part ways with the playmaker, yet getting his wages off their outgoings would help with finding a new centre-back at the turn of the year.

Courtesy of already being blessed with attacking options, the West Midlands outfit could plausibly get away with allowing Guedes to move back to Estadio de la Ceramica.
