Wolverhampton Wanderers are allegedly giving consideration to making an approach for a Sporting Lisbon winger before the end of the January transfer window.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly identified Sporting Lisbon winger Geny Catamo as a potential January transfer target.

Vitor Pereira's side suffered their third successive defeat in the Premier League on Monday night as they lost 3-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Having now conceded 51 goals in 22 matches to leave the club in 17th position in the table and only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference, Wolves' problem area of the pitch is clear.

With Mario Lemina potentially leaving Molineux before the February 3 deadline, acquiring a new central midfielder or player who can be deployed in a back three is a priority.

Nevertheless, as per O Jogo, Wolves hold an interest in adding another wide player to their ranks.

Wolves place Catamo on shortlist?

The report suggests that Catamo has been placed on a shortlist of potential arrivals having held down a regular position in the Sporting starting lineup during 2024-25.

A total of 16 starts and seven substitute outings have been made in Primeira Liga and Champions League fixtures, contributing four goals and two assists.

Catamo has been deployed in both wing-back positions as well as in the final third, his versatility an obvious attraction when Pereira is using a 3-4-3 formation.

As many as nine goals have been scored in 29 appearance for Mozambique, most notably against Ghana in a comeback 2-2 draw at the Africa Cup of Nations 12 months ago.

There are still three-and-a-half years remaining on the contract of a player who has also represented Vitoria de Guimaraes and Maritimo in Portugal.

Outgoings required first?

With Wolves prioritising defensive-minded players at this point, it is plausible to expect that outgoings may be required before they add to their attacking ranks.

Despite starting against Chelsea on Monday night, Pablo Sarabia has entered the final six months of his contract, his wages realistically dictating that he will not be offered a renewal.

Hwang Hee-chan is another squad player who may be considered for an exit, providing that a suitable offer is made for the South Korea international's signature.

Wolves could also be left with decisions to make over the future of Matheus Cunha, the Brazil international yet to extend his contract amid interest from elsewhere and having been criticised by Pereira for his 'body language' against Chelsea.
