York City have failed with a bid for Nottingham Forest midfielder Jonathan Greening.
The 34-year-old started his career at the League Two club before moving to Manchester United in 1998.
"We tried to bring him to the club and made the phone call," City manager Nigel Worthington told the York Press.
"It's not happening because they did not want to let the lad out and want to keep him with the rest of the squad.
"I will keep tabs on his situation though next week because you never know what can change in this game."
Greening signed a three-year contract with Forest in summer 2011 following a one-season spell at Fulham.
