The German was 0.018s quicker than Hamilton, while Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo were third and fourth respectively.

Saturday's session saw another messy end, as Max Verstappen somehow emerged unscathed after misjudging the Massenet bend and hitting the barriers.

Verstappen did manage to get to the pits and was back out again towards the end, finishing in fifth behind Red Bull teammate Ricciardo.

The final two minutes of the Monte Carlo session counted for little, due to Kevin Magnussen - down in 16th - running wide and bringing out the yellow caution flags.
