Graeme McDowell has revealed that he was proud of his performance on day three of the Open Championship after he took a share of second at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Following a level-par front nine, the Northern Irishman hit three birdies to leave himself on seven-under-par with overnight leader Brandt Snedeker, four shots off the lead.

"That was a good round," he told BBC Sport. "The first six or seven holes I sensed the tournament slipping away. I didn't get out of the blocks fast enough and the first six or seven holes are difficult. I was struggling, had to dig deep, show patience and I'm very proud with the way I played.

"I hit a lot of quality golf shots from 14 and hopefully put myself back in contention. It's nice to be in the final group at the Open, it's what I've always dreamed of."

Australia's Adam Scott currently leads the field on 11-under-par.
