World number one Luke Donald has suffered a shock first-round defeat to Ernie Els in the WGC-Accenture Match Play in Arizona.
Els, who is 64th seed in the competition, dominated the clash throughout and recorded a comfortable 5&4 victory as Donald made five bogeys in a dismal round.
Tiger Woods also progressed into the second round following a 1up win over Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and will face fellow American Nick Watney after he beat Open champion Darren Clarke 5&4.
Rory McIlroy, who could replace Luke Donald at the top of the world rankings this week also enjoyed a victory over George Coetzee.
There was also disappointment for British duo Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell as the pair crashed out on day one in Tuscon.
