Martin Laird out to halt Lee Westwood's progress

Scot Martin Laird is hopeful of upsetting potential new world number one Lee Westwood in the quarter-finals of the Accenture World Match Play Championship in Arizona.

Martin Laird has said that he is confident of continuing his good form at the Accenture World Match Play Championship by defeating Lee Westwood in the quarter-finals.

Westwood, 38, will snatch the world number one title from fellow Englishman Luke Donald if he can claim the WGC title.

However, Laird, who has advanced to the final eight with wins over Europeans Alvaro Quiros, Matteo Manassero and Scottish compatriot Paul Lawrie, is hopeful of moving through to the semi-finals.

"I'm looking forward to it and if I keep playing like I am it will be a good game," he said.

US Open champion Rory McIlroy can also topple Donald from the number one spot if he wins the Accenture title.

The Northern Irishman takes on relatively unknown Korean Sang-Moon Bae in the quarters at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club.
