Shane Lowry produces a faultless final-round 65 to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth by one shot.

Shane Lowry has held off the challenge of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The Irishman was among a wide array of star names who ended the penultimate round in contention for the flagship event on the DP World Tour, who are now working in partnership with the PGA Tour.

In a captivating final round, LIV Golf player Patrick Reed set the total in the clubhouse, firing in a 63 to move from 49th spot to the top of the leaderboard.

However, with the rest of the field barely into their final rounds, the American's score was never going to be enough in the favourable playing conditions.

Lowry would have been disappointed to start with three pars, but an eagle on the fourth set the ball rolling for his third successive round without a bogey.

The former Open winner was six-under for his round after 12 holes, although his most important birdie of the round would come on 18 after he narrowly missed an eagle putt which would have secured victory.

While Lowry eclipsed Rahm's 16-under-par, McIlroy was lurking in the group behind him, missing opportunities on 16 and 17 to really keep the pressure on the leader.

A magnificent approach shot into 18 gave the recently-crowned Fedex Cup champion a put from 23 feet to force a playoff, but his attempt was agonisingly one roll from finding the cup.

McIlroy instead shared the runners-up spot with Rahm, with LIV Golf player Talor Gooch finishing ahead of Reed and Thomas Detry in fourth position.

Billy Horschel, Viktor Hovland and Francesco Molinari were among a group of six players who ended the tournament in a tie for seventh spot.
