Bubba Watson eyes world number one ranking

Bubba Watson believes that reaching world number one would be similar to winning The Masters.

Bubba Watson has suggested that reaching the top of the world rankings would be similar to winning The Masters.

The American, who recorded victory at Augusta for the second time in three years last month, is one of four players who have the opportunity to replace Tiger Woods as world number one at the Players' Championship this week, and he believes that it could match the achievement of wearing the famous green jacket.

"To win the green jacket is the pinnacle of the game," Watson told reporters. "We have seen Phil Mickelson, who is arguably in the top five players of all time and he has never been world number one.

"This would be the same as winning the Green Jacket. It would be great for my family. It would be great to say thanks again to my mum. But it's not going to ruin my life or career if I don't get there. Obviously, Phil is doing alright never having been there."

Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar and Henrik Stenson are the three other players who have the opportunity to reach the top of the rankings this week.
